Dean Kamen, a prominent American inventor, founder of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), and the man responsible for the Segway, gave details of his latest project at last weeks TED Talks 2007. Commissioned by the Department of Defense, Kamen and his team have designed a functional robotic arm. It weighs only six-pounds and is nimble enough to scratch a nose, pick up a pen, and perform other delicate actions. There is a growing demand for prosthetic limbs as advancements in medicine have allowed many seriously injured people to survive what would have previously been fatal wounds.
